Diane Loffredo was able to lose 65 pounds?

Diane Loffredo 65 poundsBy the end of 2005, Diane Loffredo heard about a new Health program called Healthyroads, which was there to help the employees in getting fit and fine. Diane Loffredo said "for a long time, I'd been thinking about this," Loffredo said. "I was really out of shape, and I wanted to get fit. And I was worried about my health in general" (from miamiherald.com).

She was going to celebrate her birthday on 28 Dec and she was going to enter in 50th tear. She wanted to be absolutely fit and look in great shape. She then finally decided to join the Healthyroads, which is a California based company.

She arranged a weekly half-hour session with her fitness coach and get big file of tips with a cookbook and a pedometer. Her coach, Kimberly Asbury did not force her to make sudden changes in her lifestyle. She asked her coach in the beginning, "Right now, I just want to get fit".

She weighed about 230 pounds and in February, she made it public that she was going to lose 50 pounds for her birthday. She said, "After a couple of weeks, we talked about my diet. `What kind of breads do you eat?' And that led to more whole grains -- whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, and she explained about higher fiber content to make blood sugar steadier, which means you're not as hungry. I kind of knew that, but I hadn't applied myself."

She started using more fruits and veggies with lesser fat and lower intake of red meat. In the beginning, it was difficult for her to drink high amount of water. She was addicted to diet Coke. But when she leaves it, she was able to get some taste out of water. With this she was able to cut off her intake of sugar and sweets to some extent.

With these healthy choices, came the exercise. In the beginning, she was too much slow with her walking. But she kept improving and was able to walk 4 miles an hour. When she went to her Doctor in November, 2006 after losing 50 pounds, He said "`Diane, you have put 10 years on your life."

In March, She achievement won the grand prize of $25000 for Healthyroads' Get Healthy! National Awards program. Presently she is able to maintain a healthy life style and keep on losing small bit of weight.

Now she says, "We have to acknowledge that we're responsible for our fitness and our health. I'm really proud for the people of Mercy for having this program. I know I wouldn't have done it without it."

Planning more meals at home

I want to bring my fast food and restaurant dinning to the minimum. Right now I am going for dinning out on more than seven times in a week. The biggest role in eating out happens more in weekends. I want to bring it to at most three to four times a week. I have got some plans for making it really true.

I am planning to keep my eating pattern same as it is during the working days. No doubt eating healthy meal for the whole week is really a challenge. So here is the list of things that I am planning to do to eat more healthy meals during the whole week:

  • I am going to bring some cooking books and plan some healthy menu items out of them.

  • Planning for some meals, which can be quickly prepared when I do not have time.

  • Going to purchase all the ingredients that I will need to prepare some healthy meals at home.

  • I have decided to make a healthy menu for my breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and going to include lots of fruits and veggies.

One Day diet is too much

A recent study revealed that one woman out of three women in Scotland quit their diet within one day(24 Hours). The Scotland woman’s have the least willpower to get slim in UK (The Daily Record).

Another 25 percent quit the diet within a week and mostly said that they found it is impossible for them to go ahead with the diet.

It's not surprising, as the same number claim a diet makes them feel miserable and depressed.

The study also found that more than half of Brits also thought their partner had put on weight since they first got together.

Some 26 per cent of men said they wouldn't fancy their partner as much if they put on weight. And many would dump them if they got too fat.

Almost a third of men thought their partner could do with losing weight and 60 per cent would say something about any weight gain.

A cruel four per cent claimed they would even buy their partner clothes or underwear a size too small to hammer home the point.

Fat employees cost employers more

Study finds that the obese workers cost more to their bosses as compared to healthy workers. The fat workers have the double compensation claims and more frequently become disabled as compared to fit workers (From Yahoo News).

According to obesity experts they hope that this study will convince bosses to invest more in fat fighting programs. The employers should consider offering advice not only on safe work practices, but also on healthy eating and exercise.

A person is considered obese if his BMI is 30 or above. A person 5 feet 5 inches tall is obese at 180 pounds (82 kilograms) and morbidly obese, with a BMI of 40, at 240 pounds (109 kilograms). Obesity brings a higher risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Diet pills making you slim or unhealthy

There are many diet pills sold on the Internet that claim to be really healthy for weight loss. But many of these drugs can cause strokes, panic attacks and worse especially for women. There are too many website that sold weight loss pills without any kind of prescription or without mentioning the side effects of diet pills (From The Daily Mail).

Such sites attract the fat costumers by stats like she or he was able to lose this amount of weight in such a small interval of time or before and after weight loss pictures. Too many of us get stuck in this kind of publicity. They claim that the people in the ads were able to lose such amount of weight by healthy living. But the fact is that many of them use many diet pills like Phentermine for weight loss.

Many of sites are selling this drug online without prescription and without mentioning Phentermine side effects. And this drug is no longer prescribes in UK but is easily available on the Internet without any prescription. So many of us are putting our lives in risk by selling such diet pills online.

Researches have shown that there are around 2300 website that has been selling drugs directly to customers. According to a report last month from the UN International Narcotics Control Board, phentermine is one of the most commonly abused prescription drugs, followed by a number of similar amphetamine-type drugs collectively known as "anorectics".

Even the WeightWatchers community chat website had more than 80 message-board entries in which users talked about using phentermine - also commonly sold online under the brand names Duromine, Ionamine, Adipex and Fastin.

One website, which claimed to be "the official phentermine site", featured photographs of doctors in white coats and promised "no prescription required, no appointments, no waiting rooms and no embarrassment".

The number of overweight or obese six-to-10-year-olds dropped from 22 to 16 percent in the 10 Stockholm schools that participated in the study by banning sweets and introducing healthier lunches, the Swedish research institute said in a statement.

A control group of schools that did not introduce specific food regulations saw the number of overweight or obese children rise from 18 to 21 percent.

Leptin intake in early life may prevent obesity

According to a report by Times Online, a hormone-like substance Leptin when added to babies’ milk or given to the pregnant women, might prevent kids from getting fat in the adulthood. So then we all do not have to care for our kids eating habits and getting obese (From dailyindia).

Leptin, which is being produced by excessive amount of fat, gives signals to out brain to deter further eating. Scientists experimented with pregnant and lactating rats by providing them with Leptin- rich food and found that no matter what they ate, their babies did not put on weight.

They theorised that the intake of Leptin early in life 'hard-wires' the body's energy-balance settings.

According to Dr Mike Cawthorne of the University of Buckingham, mother's milk contains Leptin but other food supplements don't.

No of overweight people rising in Europe, especially children

According to recent studies, the number of obese people in Europe is rising and especially the rise in children is of worry for all the parents and health officials (From Yahoo News).

The obesity problem is rising like an epidemic in Europe. Estimates show there are around 1.1 billion overweight people in the world, of whom 312 million are obese, and that in Europe 10-20 percent of men are obese and almost half the population is overweight.

Around 30 percent children in Britain are either overweight or obese and this percentage in rising in south Europe. "More than 80 percent of children who are already obese will stay obese as adults," said Martin Fried of Prague's Charles University, who authored a major study on the effect of surgery on obese patients.

There are around 11 million Europeans who are grossly obese, with a body mass index of 40 or more.

Obese people are far more likely to suffer early deaths, have health problems like type-2 diabetes, and have a lower quality of life, as well as being unable to participate in work.

Obesity may rise with price of food

AUSTRALIANS’ health could be put at risk unless the Government keeps fruit and vegetable prices in check amid rising drought pressures, Labor’s health spokeswoman says (www.bordermail.com.au).

Nicola Roxon yesterday warned the drought could worsen the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Australians are bracing for the prospect of significantly higher food prices because water for irrigation in the nation’s food bowl is set to run out.

Ms Roxon said it was important for children to learn healthy eating habits while they were young.

Fruit cocktail considered as healthy food

Great news for fruits cocktail lovers, fruit cocktails are not only for fun but are now considered as healthy food. Adding ethanol -- the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila and other spirits -- boosted the antioxidant nutrients in strawberries and blackberries, the researchers found (Reuters).

Any colored fruit might be made even more healthful with the addition of a splash of alcohol.

Scientists at Kasetsart University in Thailand were exploring ways to help keep strawberries fresh during storage. Treating the berries with alcohol increased in antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity, they found.

Any colored fruit or vegetable is rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that can cancel out the cell-damaging effects of compounds called free radicals.

Berries, for instance, contain compounds known as polyphenols and anthocyanins. People who eat more of these fruits and vegetables have a documented lower risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases.

How healthy are artificial sweeteners

With the entry of big players in the Indian food market, The Indian people also have access to wide range of healthy products. There are many sweeteners and low-calorie products made with artificial sweeteners available for diabetics and weight watchers (Hindustan Times).

According to a recent study conducted by Department of Food and Nutrition, Lady Irwin College discovered that Indian food market is flooded with beverage like like Diet Pepsi, Diet Coke, Catch Clear, soft drink concentrate like D-Lite, chewing gums like Sugar Free Orbit and candies like Ricola candies.

Confectionary and sweets shops also seem to be preparing the sweets, cakes and ice creams with the sugar free sweets by adding artificial sweeteners.

The study also looked at the consumption pattern of these products among Diabetics, Overweight individuals and college girls. Aspartame was found to be the most popular sweetener among the three groups of people.

However, most consumers were using these products without knowing which sweetener they are consuming. It is important for the consumer to know that these sweeteners can also be harmful if consumed in excess.

But how does one know how much is safe? According to the investigator, the first step is to know what you are eating. A simple way to know your intake is by reading the label of tabletop sweeteners carefully and noting down which chemical is present in it as a sweetener.

The study revealed that young girls who were neither overweight nor diabetic were consuming these products with an effort to cut down their calorie intake.

In fact their mean daily intake of aspartame was higher than the diabetics and overweight individuals surveyed. All three groups were however consuming these sweeteners within the safe limits of intake.

With use of food additives like artificial sweeteners, safety becomes a prime concern. Toxicity studies for sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame are still under a cloud of controversy with some scientists claiming that even if these sweeteners are consumed at levels below the ADI, they can produce toxic effects as severe as bladder cancer by saccharin and leukemia by aspartame.

So what should the consumer do while scientists make up their mind about the safety of these sweeteners?

The best bet is to consume them in moderate amounts keeping your intake well below the ADI. Also remember that in order to keep fit and healthy, you need to do a lot more than just cut sugar from your diet. Only a diet well balanced with all nutrients and an active exercise regimen can help you keep trim and looking good.

And for diabetics it is good to develop taste for products without sweetness. Then only will they be able to resist the urge to consume sweetened products in the long run.

Want your kid eat more fruits and vegetables?

If you are looking for some way for your kids to take more servings of fruits and vegetables, then Saint Louis University new research can be really helpful for you all. According to the research it is found that the children eat more fruits and vegetables if they are homegrown (Yahoo News).

Debra Haire-Joshu, Director of Saint Louis University's Obesity Prevention Center said, "Whether a food is homegrown makes a difference. Garden produce creates what we call a 'positive food environment.'"

Researchers interviewed about 1,600 parents of preschool-aged children who live in rural southeast Missouri. They found that preschool children who were almost always served homegrown fruits and vegetables were more than twice as likely to eat five servings a day than those who rarely or never ate homegrown produce.

The American Dietetic Association recommends between five and 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

"Glycemic load" of diet has no effect on weight loss

When it comes to losing weight, the number of calories you eat, rather than the type of carbohydrates, may be what matters most, according to a new study (Yahoo News).

The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that diets low in "glycemic load" are no better at taking the pounds off than more traditional -- and more carbohydrate-friendly -- approaches to calorie-cutting.

The concept of glycemic load is based on the fact that different carbohydrates have different effects on blood sugar. White bread and potatoes, for example, have a high glycemic index, which means they tend to cause a rapid surge in blood sugar. Other carbs, such as high-fiber cereals or beans, create a more gradual change and are considered to have a low glycemic index.

The measurement of glycemic load takes things a step further by considering not only an individual food's glycemic index, but its total number of carbohydrates. A sweet juicy piece of fruit might have a high glycemic index, but is low in calories and grams of carbohydrate. Therefore, it can fit into a diet low in glycemic load.

Californians Smart or Stupid eaters?

According to California Center for Public Health Advocacy of Davis field polls, only 10 percent of Californians are able to make a healthy choice from a short list of common fast foods (Central Valley Business Times).

No one from the poll was able to answer all of four questions. Less than one percents were able to answer three out of four questions. And even 68 percent of people failed to answer single question.

Scores were equally poor regardless of education levels or income. “I have a doctorate in public health, and I failed this quiz,” says Harold Goldstein, executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy. “And common sense does not help either. Who would think that a large chocolate shake at McDonald’s has more calories than two Big Macs?”

Field Research Corporation polled 523 registered California voters from March 20-31, inviting them to pick the low calorie, low salt, high fat and high calorie item from a list of four menu options from popular restaurant or fast-food chains (from Central Valley Business Times).

Two liters of fluids per day

According to Consumer Rights Protection Centre in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, people who want to get rid of the extra fat should drink two liters of fluids every day. Many of the obese people drink very little and often mistook thirst as hunger (Hindustan Times).

The body frequently has to "learn" thirst. People not used to drinking a lot of fluids have less of an urge to drink than those who drink fluids regularly. Keeping to a "drinking schedule" can ensure that the former reach for a glass of water more often.

People who find water boring, there are many alternates available. Try unsweetened herbal and fruit teas or mixtures of sparkling water and fruit juice. Beer lovers need not fully strike the beverage from their evening diet, but beer is a poor thirst quencher and contains a lot of calories.

Obese kids more likely to have ear infection

Scientists in South Korea have discovered that obesity in children may increase the chances of some kind of ear infection. For this child may need to have tubes inserted in the ears to drain fluid, to prevent the recurrence of chronic middle ear infection (Yahoo News).

But many specialists in US have doubts over this research. Whether link exist between obesity and ear infection, but one thing it shows how extra fat can be bad for kids as it is for teens.

In the study, the researchers looked at two groups of children aged 2 to 7 -- 155 whom had tubes implanted in their ears to help them drain fluid and recover from ear infections, and 118 who were in the hospital for other reasons.

The children who were having ear infection were fatter than other kids according to their calculated BMI. Study says that The kids who have ear infection are having 22 as average BMI as compared to the 16 for the other group.

Kent Taking steps to fight against obesity

Many kids and adults are fighting against the obesity problem which seems to be growing like an epidemic all over the world. According to a national study, it was found that the 80 percent of children, who were overweight at ages 10 to 15, were obese by the age of 25 (www.woodtv.com).

A new program to fight this world wide epidemic is in progress. This program is called “Kent Steps Up!”. The fitness initiative created by the Kent County Health Department kicks off Monday and 11 schools are signed up to take part.

Each third and fourth grader will receive a pedometer to track how many steps they're taking everyday. The goal is to take at least 10,000 steps daily.

The top three schools at the end of the four-week challenge will receive $500 in prize money. That money will go toward the purchase of an item that encourages physical activity at the winning schools.

Many dieters ends up with more weight

A new study says that dieting is less likely to help a person in long term weight loss and many of them may end up with more weight gain than they were having before going on dieting. US researchers found that a person often lose 5 to 10 percent of his weight in the first six months of starting a diet (BBC NEWS).

Lead researcher Traci Mann said: "We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. "Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people.

"We concluded most of them would have been better off not going on the diet at all. "Their weight would have been pretty much the same, and their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear of losing weight and gaining it all back."

This study did not name any of diet in particular. Mann said that in her opinion eating in moderation was a good idea for everybody as was regular exercise. "Keeping weight off is a life-long challenge. It is just like heart disease or mental health problems, if you stop taking your medicine you can get worse.

"People who are overweight often don't have a balanced lifestyle and after losing weight too many stop keeping active or eating healthily."

Obese fastest growing among US overweight groups

obese woman Researchers said that the people who are overweight by 45 kg or more are the fastest growing group among all the overweight people in US. They found that share of obese was 50 percent higher in 2005 as compared to 2000, which is shocking increase (Yahoo News).

It is really surprising that the rate of obese people is growing at a very fast pace in spite of too much of attention towards the obesity and its effects on over overall health.

Researchers found that Americans with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more increased by 24 percent from 2000 to 2005. While the people with BMI of 40 or more increased by 50. And people with BMI of 50 or more increased by 75 %.

It is found that 30 percent of US people are overweight with BMI between 25 to 29 and another 30 percent who are having BMI 30 or above are obese. And overweight people have bigger chances of being more infected by heart disease, diabetes and some cancer.

Role of exercise and diet

Journal of clinical endocrinology & metabolism US has put forth a surprising relationship between exercise and diet. According to it a controlled healthy food and regular exercise is best to utilize calories because more are utilized in building muscle mass. It took two groups one is supplied with calorie - controlled diet and another is with more calories followed by a strict fitness system to burn extra calories. And results after six Month trials were quite amazing both groups shows similar reduction of energy. Both groups lose 27% abdominal visceral fat, 24% fat mass and 10% of their body weight. Most significant is lose of visceral fat.

Findings show that Weight loss can be exercised either through limiting calories or through losing calories. So weight and fat loss will occur equally if the calories are removed from the body or are never added in the first place. Researches show that building muscles can increase the body’s ability to loss weight. So an appropriate program of diet and exercise is best for weight loss.

Diet Cola Myths

diet cola There are millions of people among us who think that diet cola is a god choice for them which are low in kilojoules and sugar-free as it helps them to lose the unwanted fat. But the fact is just the opposite. According to a study named "Diet Cola Myths" it was found that diet cola could make you more fatty and rot your teeth (NEWS.com.au).

Study finds that the drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks can stimulate the appetite, triggering cravings for sweet foods. And this can make you put on extra weight. The study says that you can lose weight if you avoid these soft drinks and drink water instead.

And despite having no sugar, diet drinks are not safe for teeth because they contain phosphoric acid or citric acid, which cause tooth enamel to erode. "It's different from decay, but can be just as bad for your teeth," the report warns.

Regular coca-cola contains about eight spoons of sugar and 675kj. And a can of diet coke has less than 10kl but contains many artificial sweeteners, stimulates appetite and increases cravings for sweet foods. Diet colas usually contain at least two sweeteners that can be many hundreds of times sweeter than sugar.

But why we gain weight

So far we have been talking too much about weight loss and all other issues like various diets and exercise programs. But the very basic question that stuck my mind is why we need to lose weight i.e. how or why we gain weight. If we do not gain extra weight, then we never need to lose it. So we need to find the reasons for weight gain. The best things I feel is remove this problem in total. Today we have to look for the ways to lose weight. If we are able to find out some of the basic roots of weight gain, then we may be able to tackle this problem in a better way. And once we have the reasons why we gain weight, we can make sure that we do not do anything that leads us to gain some extra pounds. I have collected a list of reasons by which we gain weight:

  1. Lack of important fatty acid
There are some fatty acids like flaxseed oil, which are important for our body to keep up the metabolic rate and to make hormones that our body needs. Lack of these acids can cause cravings, particularly for fatty foods.

  2. By emotional eating
Many people take food as a source of enjoyment and a good source of getting rid of tension and all. They start thinking food as their best friend. And in this way they start eating too much and that leads to lot of weight gain.

  3. Due to modern life
In today life, we do not have one thing that is time. So we do not do anything for our health like exercise, healthy eating and nothing positive. We are moving from traditional eating habits to restaurant foods in office and home.

  4. Use of Alcohol
Use of alcohol has also made add the problems for us.

  5. Lack of sleep
There are very few people among us in US who are able to take the recommended sleep of eight hours. And sleeping for too few hours bring hormonal change and which force us to weight gain.

  6. Satisfactory temperature
We try to keep the temperature in the office, home and car, which is very comfortable to us. You know when we are cold our body uses energy to warm us and when we feel hot, it uses energy to chill us. But by making the temperature comfortable and controlled, we are losing calorie-burning opportunities.

  7. With growing population
America is growing older and becoming more culturally diverse, particularly among the Hispanic-American population. Both of these groups, people over the age of 35 and those of Hispanic descent, have above average rates of obesity.

  8. Moms at older age
Women are taking too much time for becoming mother. Studies have shown that a teenager girl's risk of becoming obese increases by 14 percent for every five-year increment in maternal age.

  9. Overweight people children
When two overweight people have kids, their children are more likely to experience weight challenges than a child conceived by lean people.

Obesity is getting bigger Even in Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia

According to health minister Chua Soi Lek, obesity will become a epidemic in Malaysia in the next ten years if nothing to do to stop the increasing obesity rate (Yahoo News). He said that other health related problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and knee problems are getting high. Obesity problem has increased in Malaysia at a very brisk pace. The percentage of obese people, which was 4.4 in 1996, has gone up to 12.2 by 2003(almost tripled).

But the most surprising thing has happened in Thailand. Thailand has always been known for its tasty food and slim people. But now they have been looking for the solutions for the growing obesity problem. Chaicharn Deerochanawong, consultant in diabetes who works for the Ministry of Public Health says, we are eating more fat (junk food) as compared to the traditional Thai food which contains too many vegetables. He says in the past we did not eat too much but exercise a lot. A ministry study in 2003 found that 33.8 percent of Thai females and 31.5 percent of males were obese, representing a 50 percent rise from 1998.

Obese in Rio treated like horses

obese people Rio de Janeiro hospital has been forcing obese patients to share the medical equipment with horse at local race track. This act has brought the attention of many activists who say this act is totally humiliating (Yahoo News).

When people have more weight than the standard equipment they are having, they are sent to the Jockey Club there have the suitable equipments. Obese patients, who want to lessen their stomach, need to go through the surgery which require a tomography, or multiple X-raying of body sections and that is carried out in a chamber.

Rio hospital has tomography equipment for those patients only who is weighting from 265 of pounds to 287 of pounds. Tomographs that are used on horses are sturdier and more spacious than common devices.

Many patients feel humiliated to go there said, Rosimere Lima da Silva, head of the Group for Salvaging Self-Esteem and Citizenship of the Obese (Graco).

How about losing weight while brushing your teeth

Diet aid toothpaste The latest miracle in the food market is the Diet Aid Toothpaste which claims that it can take some edge of your hunger and thus helps you in consuming around 500 less calories per day. This way if it works, will be able to lose one pound per week (www.dailymail.co.uk).

But it is quite expensive – about £6 for single tube which is just triple the rate of normal toothpastes we use. Diet Aid Toothpaste's manufacturers claim the magic ingredient is appetite suppressant chromium.

This Diet Aid Toothpaste looks nice and the instructions that are available with this Toothpaste states that we have to brush all parts of our mouth like teeth, tongue, upper part and the inner side of cheeks for at least two minutes. And this has to be dome five times or we can say whenever we take our meals or take some snacks kind of thing.

If this is the case, we have to keep it with us like we keep our mobile, purse etc with us. And we also have to use it I our office, at our friends house or even anywhere we are haaaaaaa.

But if all this is just a scam, then we are not going to lose any pound, but are only going to get too much of pain in our mouth.

According to a research, tall people burns calories more effectively while they are running or walking as compared to short people. Herman Pontzer, a biological anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis found that a tall person walking the same distance as a short person of identical weight and pace burns fewer calories, because longer legs are more efficient (www.northjersey.com).

Pontzer found that long-legged people expended slightly fewer calories during locomotion: about 8 calories per mile for a 6-foot person versus a 5-foot person of equal weight. "For people standing around the water cooler, having long or short legs isn't an excuse that your diet's not working," he says. "It's not a big enough effect."
