According to a latest study, the chances of asthma occurrence increase by 50 percent in obese and overweight people as compared to the people with normal weight. These results appear in the first issue for April 2007 of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society (www.medicalnewstoday.com).
According to the experts, the chances of asthma can be reduced in the obese people by reduced by targeted interventions against being overweight or obese. According to a survey (1999-2002), 65% of adults in US are either overweight or obese and around 7 percent of US population is affected by asthma. Although Asthma is not as common in US as the problem of obesity, but it is found that the chanced of asthma occurrence are very much similar in overweight men and women.
According to Dr Sutherland, if we are able to get some major success in weight loss with the obese and overweight people, it may be estimated that the new asthma case in US may decrease by 250,000 per year.
